The Saarloos Wolfdog is a very large breed that retains many of their wolf ancestor's traits. They are meant for outdoor work but also need a little human interaction. The Sarloos Wolfdog makes a wonderful watch and guard dog.

Behavior

The Saarloos Wolfdog still carries a lot of wolf-like attitude. They are independent and watchful, with the instincts of a wolf. Early training is essential for these dogs to be able to get along with children, other family members, and other dogs in the household. They do not do well around cats, as their hunting instincts will likely take over. Since these dogs can both bark and bite, they will not take kindly to strangers.

Coat

The Saarloos Wolfdog has two different coats - one for summer and one for winter. Their coats are long on the top coat and thick undercoat. Their winter coats protect them from harsh elements, but they will shed this coat in favor of their summer coats when it's too hot under that blanket of fur. They need only regular combing and brushing and bathing should be done only sparingly.

Lifestyle

The only kind of master that will work well with a Saarloos Wolfdog is one who is both experienced and active. These dogs will obey only after extensive training and socializing. Having a solid connection to their wolf ancestors makes them the kind of animal that is best used as a guard and watch dog - not a family snuggle pet.

Activity

The Saarloos Wolfdog needs plenty of regular everyday exercises. Playtime will use up most of their energy, but they also need their pack to fulfill their primal instinct to migrate, which is walking or jogging. The Sar will not do well in an apartment setting, as these dogs need room to roam and run.

About the Saarloos Wolfdog

The Saarloos Wolfdog is a large breed that is a cross between a very large wolf and a German Shepherd. This special breed walks on the wild side a bit still and is more inclined to pack life than hanging out with their human master. They love life outdoors, and they also love having a job to do. They are easily mistaken for wolves, based on their coat and coloring, and need a very devoted and firm master who will appreciate all of their fine herding and shepherding skills.
