My name is Merritt and I operate this page under the name North Hickory Goldens (formerly 'Capps Family Goldens') as a nod to my family’s old furniture business in our little city of Hickory NC! Connecting people with this amazing breed is my passion. Thank you for stopping by. I am pleased and honored to introduce you to my sweet pups.
I am a small hobby breeder of AKC Golden Retrievers bred for family life. My highest goal in this endeavor is to provide you with a healthy, well socialized and happy companion for all of life's adventures. We breed for sound minds and kind hearts! However, just like there is no one breed fits all, the same goes for breeders. I am happy to talk you through how I operate and will never try to sell you a puppy for the sake of selling it. I want my puppies to find the right home that fits them. I am more than happy to help you navigate the process and give you recommendations on other Golden breeders that may better suit your needs if I cannot.
Our parents are DNA & Embark tested. Our puppies are raised on elements of the puppy culture curriculum and follow the ENS and ESI schedule. Our puppies are born and raised in our home with us. It is always a special day when we get to support a sweet Dam as she whelps! The puppies are handled daily and very well socialized.
Raising puppies has become one of my favorite things. There is nothing better than watching them learn and grow into confident and curious puppies! We expose them to all the sights, sounds and smells of a busy household. Ensuring that when they come home to you they will ease right into your life (and heart). We also work on potty training and crate desensitization.
Our Dams and Sires are our family dogs. We keep a small number of dogs (3 max) so we can steward them to the best of our ability! We currently have 1 Dam and 1 Sire. Our other retired Dam lives with a close relative(my mom). Retired dogs stay with us for their lifetime unless a close friend or relative talks us into a "joint custody" arrangement. We take our job of stewardship over these dogs seriously. We only breed when it is in the best interest of the dog and have made hard decisions to retire a Dam early or before they ever whelp. Their health and well being is objectively more important.
All our puppies go home with their LIMITED AKC paperwork, vet records/vaccination record, current dry dog food, a blanket with mom's scent and some goodies from us! All puppies are vet checked around 7 weeks and receive the DHPP 4-in-1 vaccine against Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza & Parvo. Our vet also does a wellness check for all puppies. All records will be found in your puppy folder! We thoroughly de-worm our pups at 2,4,6 & 8 weeks of age.

While there are some benefits to keeping a female "in tact" even after she retires there are also significant risks(Pyometra/Cancer). All retired Dams are spayed after their last litter. We are currently working to step up our health screenings by including more in depth forms of health testing prior to breeding. An essential part to responsible breeding is continuing to educate ourselves on the best practices.
