My wife and I are both from East Texas. Thirty five years ago we started our family in Arlington, TX where I did computer work for 14 years working for big companies doing technical work.
By the time we moved back home to the Tyler area we had seven kids and started accumulating animals (and more kids). All our kids had the opportunity (and were sometimes required :) to milk the cows, feed the chickens, and do all kinds of animals chores. It’s a good way to grow up.
About Betts Family Farm
Since 2005 we’re on 32 beautiful acres in the community of New Harmony, livin the dream :) on part of the property that has been in our family over 100 years. We’ve been “unplugged” (off grid) the whole time.
Our hobby farm consists of a few each of
Cows - milk (Jersey) & meat breeds
Sheep - St. Croix & Katahdin - meat
Goats - Nigerian and a few Pygmy’s - milk & meat
Chickens - various breeds - all egg birds
Ducks - Muscovy - eggs and meat
Pyrenees - livestock guardian dogs to protect the sheep, goats and poultry
Cats - American Bobtail - for vermin control
Emu - just interesting birds
Peacocks - Indian Blue - just pretty birds
The Pyrenees protect all the free-ranging animals. We have four - two males and two females.
