American Black and Tan Coonhound
Breed Group: hound
"I can smell dinner from across the Internet!"
Breed Profile
Black and Tan Coonhounds have one of the best noses in the business. They are expert trackers and loving, family-friendly dogs. They get along well with most people and other animals. Some people say they have a musty smell, but their wonderful personalities more than make up for it.
Behavior
Black and Tan Coonhounds are friendly and happy toward almost all people and other animals. They do love to hunt, so wild animals should beware! When a Black and Tan Coonhound gets excited, they will use their voice to let you, and everyone within 5 miles, know how they’re feeling. They can be stubborn, but they love to eat, so having treats on hand can be a good trick to have up your sleeve if you’re having trouble convincing your pooch to listen.
Coat
The Black and Tan Coonhound has a short coat that sheds quite a bit. However, shedding can be reduced by brushing their hair weekly, which will also help distribute essential skin oils throughout their exterior. A lot of people notice that Black and Tan Coonhounds have a musty odor, which is common to hounds. Unfortunately, that's part of the price of owning one of these wonderful creatures, but you can manage their smell by giving them regular baths.
Lifestyle
Black and Tan Coonhounds need room to roam. They do best in rural areas where they can get out and follow their noses to fun. They are one of the few hounds that are happy both indoors and out. Of course, if they are living outdoors, they still need lots of love and companionship to be happy, so be sure to pay them the attention they deserve. Black and Tan Coonhounds love people and crave human companions. They get along really well with children and other animals, but can sometimes be a little too rambunctious for toddlers.
Activity
Black and Tan Coonhounds love to hunt. They’ll follow their nose as long as their leash or their yard will let them. If you’re a hunter, take them with you and they’ll love you forever. If you don't’ hunt, you can still have lots of fun outside. They enjoy long walks where they’re able to stop and smell the roses, err, the rabbits. Because of their strong prey drive, you should plan on needing to exercise a Black and Tan Coonhound for about an hour every day.
