Black Mouth Cur
Breed Group: herding
"You might recognize my cousin, 'Old Yeller!'"
Breed Profile
The Black Mouth Cur combines the sweetness of a family dog with the fierceness of a hunter. These dogs are always on the go and ready to bark at anything that crosses its path, but at the end of the day, all they want to do is cuddle.
Behavior
Black Mouth Curs are the ultimate canine hunters. They’re vocal watchdogs that are prepared to do whatever it takes to keep their family safe. The Black Mouth Cur is aggressive while hunting but sweet and sensitive at home. They go above and beyond to please their owners, but they need a leader who will keep them in line.
Coat
The Black Mouth Cur’s short coat can come in a variety of shades of yellow, fawn, and brindle. Some dogs are born with heavier coats, while others within the same litter can be born with lighter coats. Either way, the Black Mouth Cur is easy to groom. Brush your pup once in a while to remove loose hair and only bathe it when needed.
Lifestyle
Black Mouth Cur are loyal dogs that consider children and other family dogs part of their pack. However, they shouldn’t be trusted with non-canine animals, as their hunting instincts may take over. These dogs require plenty of exercise and activity, so they do best in rural settings where they have ample space to roam freely. While they enjoy spending time outdoors, Black Mouth Curs like to live indoors so they can be close to their families.
Activity
As a hunting dog, the Black Mouth Cur craves activity. They need plenty of room to roam, and they do best when they get a long, brisk walk or run each day. These dogs will take all the exercise they can get, so lace up those shoes and get ready to get active.

About the Black Mouth Cur
The Black Mouth Cur is a sweet and stealthy hunter. By day, they love hunting wild animals in the field, and by night, you can find them snuggling up to their owners as the ideal loyal family companion. In fact, the classic novel, Old Yeller, was about a boy and his Cur dog, who stayed by his side through thick and thin. These pups consider themselves the guardians of their families and fellow pups, but they would rather hunt non-canine animals than make friends. As long as their owner can establish authority and keep up with their high energy, the Black Mouth Cur will never leave their side.
