The Croatian Sheepdog is rarely found outside of Croatia. They are exuberant and intensely active dogs who love to work hard. They love their owners and need lots of daily physical exercise. Low maintenance and loyal, these dogs are ready for a variety of activities.
Behavior
The Croatian Sheepdog is lovable and loyal when provided with a large yard and a great deal of activity with their owners. They are alert and agile, and they have a strong need for human companionship. They love to bark as puppies but can become docile companions with proper training, quickly taking their cues from their owners. When there’s nothing to do, the Croatian Sheepdog is content to lie next to their family members, awaiting the next task. Being an instinctive herder, they are wary of strangers. Therefore, the breed usually only takes to one master.
Coat
Croatian Sheepdogs are usually usually black with occasional white patches on their chests and/or toes They have a soft wavy-to-curly type coat that covers most of their bodies. Their face hair is always short, while their foreheads, backs, and forelegs and hindlegs have a longer hairs in a feathered pattern. This breed is an average shedder. Keeping this breed clean is relatively easy, just an occasional brushing or combing to remove dead hair and an occasional bath if dirty.
Lifestyle
Life with a Croatian Sheepdog means fun, activity, and love. They generally gravitate to just one owner but get along well with small children and other pets when socialized at a young age. They are alert and territorial, serving as effective watchdogs. In addition to being a hard to find, they need large amounts of exercise and room to run. If you can provide the Croatian Sheepdog with a lot of exercise, and some fun agility games, you’ll have a best friend for life.
Activity
Croatian Sheepdogs are sports superstars. They can keep up at a variety of dog agility games, and their enormous energy levels will keep you moving for hours. They need at least a good daily walk, and if left idle for too long, they will express destructive behaviors. Croatian Sheepdog possess a strong herding instinct and will seek after a good chase at every opportunity. They may pose a threat to other small animals, so keep this breed leashed or properly secured at all times when outdoors.

The Croatian Sheepdog is Croatia’s oldest native dog breed, bred to have enormous energy for working out on the Slavic plains. Today, they still make wonderful, active companions who love their owners. The Croatian Sheepdog is intelligent and loves to play in agility games and to be with their owners. Experts at herding cattle and sheep, these medium-sized dogs respond well to herding commands from their owners. They also make excellent watch dogs, due to their intense loyalty. They are healthy dogs that are easy to groom, which is perfect since they're ready to go at a moment's notice. If trained early, they are obedient and will avoid destructive behaviors.
