Estrela Mountain Dog

Breed Group: working
"I'm the big dog!"
Breed Profile
Estrela Mountain Dogs were bred to watch and protect livestock. Gentle and kindhearted, they would also take it upon themselves to nurture newborns from the herd. These instincts are still very much alive today. As a family pet, they make good guard dogs and gentle companions for children and those they love.

Behavior

These large guardians are affectionate, calm, and loyal with their families, especially with young children. Their loyalty is as fierce as their bark. When new people approach their property, Estrela Mountain Dogs become very protective, which also makes them exceptional guard dogs. If this is your first time as a dog owner, though, this breed might not be the best fit. They will test your role as the pack leader and only listen to an assertive owner. Early and consistent training can help.

Coat

You will find that some Estrela Mountain Dogs have a short coat while on others, it is slightly longer. The hair for both varieties feels thick and coarse. Their coat color can vary, but they always have a dark face muzzle. When grooming, pay close attention to the hair around their ears as it has a tendency to mat. A regular weekly brushing will help.

Lifestyle

Estrela Mountain Dogs can adapt to living both indoors and out. They do best in a large home with an equally large fenced-in backyard. These dogs can be friendly with other dogs and animals, especially if they were raised together.

Activity

These working dogs can help with farm chores and pull carts. Highly intelligent and courageous, they have also served as police dogs. Estrela Mountain Dogs require at least one hour of activity per day. Something as simple as a long, daily run can make them content.

About the Estrela Mountain Dog

Named after their native mountains in Portugal, Estrela Mountain Dogs were bred to watch and protect livestock. These large guardians would face and scare off the biggest, baddest animals out there in order to guard their sheep. On a sweeter note, they would also nurture newborn animals that were part of the herd. These instincts are still present today and, as a family pet, these loyal dogs are gentle toward young children and other pets. Protective instincts are still present as well. Alert around strangers, they make good guard dogs. They sometimes think they know better than their owners and do best with experienced dog owners. The happiest Estrela Mountain Dogs live in wide-open spaces.
