Overview

Hailing from Brazil, the Fila Brasileiro’s temper is as hot as their native country. Their size, power, and fierce loyalty make them excellent guard dogs. However, the breed’s protectiveness can border on hostility without the proper training, care, and surroundings.

Fila Brasileiros are big, powerful dogs that are extremely protective and headstrong. They bond quickly with their families but need an owner who can be the pack leader and keep them in line. This breed makes great guard dogs, but their natural instinct to protect can cross over into aggression if confronted by strangers or animals invading their territory. Despite their size and strength, Fila Brasileiros are well-known for adoring children and are happy to take all the abuse they can give. Keep them active and stimulated, and they’ll keep you safe in return.

Temperament and Behavior

The Fila Brasileiro is an extremely protective breed. They’re wonderful guard dogs that won’t hesitate to keep their families safe. Some owners love this natural protectiveness, while others find that it makes them harder to manage. If you’re considering a Fila Brasileiro, prepare to be a strong and assertive pack leader that can teach them when it’s appropriate to protect and when to back off. Without proper training, the breed can be aggressive and potentially dangerous.

Coat & Grooming

The Fila Brasileiro's coat is very distinct. Their fur is short and smooth, but the skin underneath is thick and loose, particularly around the neck and muzzle. This breed comes in several color variations, but the most common ones are fawn, brindle, and black. Fila Brasilerios may also have a black mask and white markings on their feet, chest, and tail. This breed is an average shedder that doesn’t need much grooming. All they require is occasional brushing with a firm bristle brush and a towel or chamois rubdown to give them a healthy glow.

Lifestyle & Living Conditions

Despite their size and strength, the Fila Brasileiro is loving and affectionate. They become very attached to their owners and are known for protecting kids and non-canine pets in the home. However, Fila Barsilerios don’t get along well with strangers regardless of how much they’ve been socialized, so they aren’t a good fit for families that entertain often.

Exercise & Activity

Fila Brasileiros need vigorous exercise every day to stay happy and healthy. They have high energy levels and need lots of space to run. Large, fenced yards are perfect for this breed, but they aren’t well-suited for apartment life. Like many dogs, Fila Brasileiros can become high strung and destructive when they don’t get enough stimulation, so make sure they have plenty of space and activities to keep them busy.
