Finnish Lapphunds are popular in Finland, and they’re beginning to gain popularity in America because of their good looks, protectiveness, and companionship. Lappies are intelligent and watchful yet quite gentle around their families. If you can keep up with their energy, they make the perfect watchdog and family friend.

Behavior

With reindeer hunting in their blood, Finnish Lapphunds have natural intelligence, agility, and bravery. They’re also very vocal, which may require a little training to teach them when barking is and is not appropriate. Although they may be more assertive or aggressive toward animals, Finnish Lapphunds couldn’t be friendlier around people. They consider themselves the family watchdog and will do whatever it takes to keep them safe.

Coat

Finnish Lapphunds have typical Spitz coats that are long and thick. Their fur comes in a variety of colors and is prone to shedding. Their shedding is especially heavy during spring and fall, so brush them every day during those seasons and a few times a week during other seasons.

Lifestyle

The Finnish Lapphund loves children and will take on the role of their protector. They get along fine with other cats and dogs in the family if they’re raised together, but they may be aloof toward other dogs they meet in public. Lappies were bred in the cold tundras of Finland, but now that they’re usually companion dogs, they prefer to live inside with the family. Due to their size and barking, they’re a better fit for homes rather than apartments or small spaces.

Activity

As an avid hunter, the Finnish Lapphund is used to getting a lot of exercise and will expect you to keep up with it. Plan on keeping them active for at least half an hour each day, whether engaging them in a long run, brisk walk, hike, or game of fetch. Lappies also do well at dog sports, like rally, agility, and flyball.

About the Finnish Lapphund

The Finnish Lapphund, or “Lappie,” was originally bred as a reindeer herder, so they have plenty of stamina and a steadfast work ethic. These dogs are smart, alert, and they love barking, making them great watchdogs and family companions. They’re protective of their owners and won’t hesitate to leap into action, but behind the scenes, they’re gentle pups that just want your love and attention. Lappies have beautiful coats that shed a lot but are not hard to groom. This dog also needs extra attention in the exercise department. They're used to having plenty of activity, so be sure to get their blood pumping each day to keep them fit and happy.
