Overview

Japanese Terriers have big personalities and make fun companions. These small lapdogs like warmer weather and don’t mind sporting a bright sweater. They will soak up all the attention it brings their way! Although athletic squirrel-chasers, Japanese Terriers can be fragile and do best in a calm environment.

A rare breed, Japanese Terriers are small in size, yet big in personality. They have a great sense of humor and are sure to bring some laughs! These mini comedians have a distinctive black marking covering their full head and a white, spotted body. They get cold easily and will happily wear a sweater – especially if it gets them extra attention! Although athletic, these are petite dogs who do best in calmer settings and can get hurt roughhousing with larger pets. With a Japanese Terrier in your life, though, you won’t have to worry about those pesky squirrels in your backyard anymore. These goofy dogs will make it their solemn duty to chase them all away!

Temperament and Behavior

Japanese Terriers are sure to brighten your household with their cheery attitude! They are smart, good-natured, goofy lapdogs. They are content curling up beside you on the couch, but should be nudged outside every day to take in some much-needed frolicking. And squirrel chasing. Some Japanese Terriers can be cautious with strangers, especially if the person happens to be loud and brash. They prefer to be around those who are calm and gentle, not to mention those who make them the center of attention!

Coat & Grooming

Japanese Terriers have a short, glossy coat that is easy to maintain. Brush occasionally to manage dead hairs and bathe as needed. However, Japanese Terriers weigh less than 10 pounds and are susceptible to the cold. If not living in a warm climate, you might have to put together a nice wardrobe for these silly pups!

Lifestyle & Living Conditions

Japanese Terriers are 100% indoor dogs. They may play outside, but they enjoy most of their time inside entertaining their families. These small terriers are a good match for a single person or a family with older children. They are sweet and playful but can be fragile, which is why they are not recommended as playmates for little ones or large pets. As far as doggie friends, their ideal companion is another Japanese Terrier.

Exercise & Activity

You’ll find Japanese Terriers will keep one eye on you and one eye on the squirrels. They’ll chase them as you take them for a daily walk or bounce around the backyard. These small terriers are extremely playful and will also happily retrieve a ball thrown for them. Smart and energetic, they are always up for new games and activities!
