Overview

One of the oldest breeds from Japan, Kai Kens are considered a national treasure in their homeland. They have acted as guard dogs and hunters for hundreds of years. These brindled beauties are suspicious of strangers but warm and loving toward those within their family unit.

Sporting a striking brindle coat, the Kai Ken is one of the oldest breeds from Japan and is considered a national treasure. Hunting and acting as guard dogs are two jobs these dogs have held for ages. Kai Kens are alert and like to keep an eye on things at all times. You might even see them perched on the back of a couch or other odd places to get a good view. Kai Kens are naturally wary of strangers, so socialization is important. However, working in packs, they are generally friendly toward other dogs. Kai Kens are also very loving and affectionate with their two-legged pack!

Temperament and Behavior

As family members, Kai Kens are trustworthy, affectionate, and protective. With proper socialization and training, Kai Kens generally make loving companions for children, although young family members should be reminded not to tug on ears and tails. Their guardian instincts can take effect when strangers approach and might take a warming-up period with new friends. As with most breeds, well-exercised dogs are well-behaved dogs!

Coat & Grooming

Kai Kens have a beautiful and unique coat. It starts out as solid black fur and changes to a reddish brindle as they get older. Kai Kens owners' grooming kits should include a slicker brush, doggie tooth brush and vet-approved toothpaste, pet shampoo, and nail clippers. Their dense coat requires weekly brushing to remove dead hairs. Kai Kens are very clean dogs, so it is only recommended to bathe them as needed.

Lifestyle & Living Conditions

Kai Kens are a good fit for experienced dog owners and active families with older children. These athletic dogs do have exercise needs and make good use of a large backyard – especially one with a view. But these devoted pooches can fare well in most indoor household settings provided they receive their daily walks and regular runs. Kai Kens are used to working in packs and enjoy having dog buddies around. They have strong hunting instincts and should be supervised around small furry pets.

Exercise & Activity

Kai Kens enjoy hiking with the family and going for a long morning run. Kai Kens have a high prey drive and should be kept on a leash when away from home. Activities that involve the whole pack, or family, will make a happy Kai!
