Overview

Karelian Bear Dogs are a Finnish breed who were bred to hunt bears, elks, and large game. These brave, intelligent dogs are happy around their pack of people, but they must have early socialization, training, plenty of exercise, and experienced owners to be balanced dogs. Karelian Bear Dogs prefer to be working outside and protecting their territory.

Their name says it all: Karelian Bear Dogs put up a good fight against bears, elk, and other large animals. This rare breed from Finland likes to hunt and work. They are good with people within their pack as long as they’re with highly experienced owners who put forth the time and patience training these primitive pups. Home life doesn’t particularly interest them, though. They’d rather be out in the fields, protecting their home from bears and burglars. This black-and-white breed is a fan of the great outdoors and would love to live on lots of land.

Temperament and Behavior

Karelian Bear Dogs are tough dogs who do not blink an eye at animals triple their size. Karelian Bear Dogs are loyal and very protective of their family pack and will do pretty much anything to keep them safe and sound. These high-energy, hardy dogs will sound the alarm at the sight of strangers and can be slow to warm up to guests. Karelian Bear Dogs require patience and strong leadership. They are extremely intelligent and have a tendency to think that they know best, making them difficult to train, but it’s worth the time and effort to train and socialize these energetic pooches. Karelian Bear Dogs are sure to reward you with their unwavering devotion and loyalty for life!

Coat & Grooming

Karelian Bear Dogs do not smell like bears… or much like dogs, for that matter. As furry dogs go, their black-and-white double coat gives off less of an odor than most. Karelian Bear Dogs’ weatherproof coat requires weekly brushing with a metal-toothed comb, which can help remove dead hairs from their undercoat and reduce shedding.

Lifestyle & Living Conditions

Karelian Bear Dogs love the great outdoors and make a great match for experienced owners of a similar attitude and active lifestyle. Due to their large size, this breed does not do well in smaller settings, so an apartment will quickly shrink in size with a Karelian Bear Dog living in it. With strong hunting and protective instincts, early socialization and training is the key to having these dogs around pets, pooches, and children. It’s important that Karelian Bear Dogs know who the head honcho is in the house. Much to their surprise, it’s not them!

Exercise & Activity

Karelian Bear Dogs are workers. They can fill many roles working alongside law enforcement, hunting, and serving as great hiking and camping companions. No need for bear spray when Karelian Bear Dogs are with you in the woods!
