Overview

Assertive and devoted, the Kuvasz is a family-oriented dog with a penchant for protection. This snow white beauty is suspicious of strangers, but once you’re in the inner circle, you’ll have a fast friend who will do anything to keep you safe.

The Kuvasz is a brave and loyal dog that shows their love through protection. They consider their families their “children,” and will risk their lives to keep them safe. This breed is usually shy around strangers and animals they don’t know, but once they realize that they’re part of the family, the Kuvasz will consider them part of the inner circle. They may seem like anti-social, outdoor dogs, but they’re quite the opposite. These dogs will often opt for a cozy spot next to you where they can keep an eye on everyone instead of independent playtime or activities in the yard.

Temperament and Behavior

The Kuvasz is a bold, strong-willed, and curious dog that considers protecting their family as their one and only job. This breed is a good watch dog, but behind their assertive exteriors are patient, kind pooches who enjoy spending time with the people they love. Aside from their natural tendency to guard those around them, Kuvasz dogs are known for their fast movements and high-pitched voices. The breed may be suspicious around strangers but will extend their protectiveness to them once they think of them as part of the family.

Coat & Grooming

Kuvasz dogs have a gorgeous double coat of white hair. Although their fur is beautiful, it also makes them high maintenance when it comes to grooming. The Kuvasz sheds quite a bit and needs to be brushed weekly with a pin brush to remove dead or loose hair. This shedding increases significantly in summer, when they lose most of their long winter coat. Luckily, brushing takes care of most of the dirt, so they only need a bath once in a while.

Lifestyle & Living Conditions

If the Kuvasz is brought up with a family of children, they will get along well with them and may even extend their protectiveness to their friends. However, not all Kuvasz dogs are good with kids. They need to be socialized, and the children need to be taught how to interact with the dog. Because of their size, the breed is best suited for homes instead of apartments, so the dog has plenty of space to roam and exercise.

Exercise & Activity

The Kuvasz is a working dog that was developed to guard flocks. Although they no longer have that role in most families, they still have a lot of energy. Daily exercise is important to keep them happy and healthy, and they are well-suited for agility and sports like hiking, rally, and backpacking. When training your Kuvasz in these sports, keep in mind that they are smart and independent. They’ll need a strong, consistent, and firm leader that provides praise and reward.
