Overview
The Large Munsterlander may have an odd name, but these dogs are easy to understand. All you need to know is that they love to hunt and be around people. If you’re up for the chase, these hunting pups will be your pal for life.
The Large Munsterlander can be summed up in one word: hunter. These dogs were bred to hunt, and it’s still their favorite activity. They’re best suited for hunting homes, but they can get along fine as family companions too. Munsterlanders are intelligent, easygoing, and gentle, but they’ll take any opportunity to chase and play. They get along well with kids and other dogs, but their prey drive leads them to chase cats and rodents instead of making friends. The Munsterlander’s coat is beautiful and fairly easy to maintain. They need a bit of brushing, but be prepared for them to run the second a small critter is in sight.
Temperament and Behavior
Large Munsterlanders have one favorite activity that dictates the rest of their personality: hunting. These dogs have an impressive nose and will sniff out any other animals around. They’re very smart and learn quickly, so you can train them to carry out tasks from retrieving a ball to hunting critters. Despite their size, Munsterlanders are quite calm and gentle. They make great family dogs and love companionship almost as much as they love the chase.
Coat & Grooming
The Large Munsterlander has a silky coat that’s medium or long and has a black and white pattern. Its fur often feathers around the belly, chest, legs, tail, and ears. These dogs are moderate shedders that need to be brushed a few times each week to keep their coats in good shape.
Lifestyle & Living Conditions
Large Munsterlanders are best suited as hunting dogs, but they make good family companions as well. These pups get along well with other dogs and children, but their hunting instincts are set off around cats and small animals. Munsterlanders were bred to hunt, so they do better in homes with large yards, not apartments. They also should live primarily indoors where they can be around people and activity.
Exercise & Activity
The Large Munsterlander may be calm when it’s lying around the house, but they have lots of pent up energy that needs to be let out. Their favorite activity is hunting, but if you have a Munsterlander as a pet, prepare to give it plenty of strenuous exercise like hiking, biking, or running. They especially love chasing things, so the more you can tap into their prey drive, the happier they’ll be.
