Overview
The Majorca Shepherd Dog, or Ca de Bestiar, is a herder and protector at heart. They love being on guard dog duty and watching over their families, animal friends, and territory. Majorca Shepherds are not good with young kids, but they’re perfect for farmers who need a herding buddy.
The Majorca Shepherd Dog may look like a black labrador, but their personalities are quite different. This breed, also known as the Ca de Bestiar and Perro de Pastor Mallorquin, is a Spanish farm dog that was bred to protect the flock. Although they’re fierce in the field, Majorca Shepherds are usually friendly behind the scenes. These dogs like children and other animals, but their herding habits sometimes get in the way and come off as aggressive. Training and socialization can help, but these pups are a better fit as workers rather than family friends.
Temperament and Behavior
Majorca Shepherds are primarily used for working, herding, and protecting. They make great guard dogs and will do whatever it takes to keep their family and flock safe. When not on duty, the Majorca Shepherd is a loyal pup that is known to bond with one person in particular. Some may speculate that these dogs don't make good friendly pets, but some are known to be friendly to all family members with early socialization.
Coat & Grooming
Majorca Shephers look like dark Labradors with thick, black hair. Their fur can be long or short and is usually wavy on their back. Short-haired CDBs won’t require much grooming, while the long-haired variety will need a bit more help to keep their coat clean and free of tangles.
Lifestyle & Living Conditions
The Majorca Shepherd is a herding dog, so they're happiest in homes that have large yards or room to run around. They’re best suited as working dogs, but with the right training and socialization, they can be family pets too. However, their herding tendencies may kick in around children and small animals, so they are not a good fit for families with kids or small pets. Although they have dark hair, the Majorca Shepherd can withstand warm temperatures, but they should have access inside so they can be around their owners.
Exercise & Activity
This breed is energetic and lively, so they need lots of exercise. Majorca Shepherds love having a yard or farm to run around, and they’ll jump at any activity you give them. The more stimulation you give their minds and bodies, the happier this pup will be.
