Nederlandse Kooikerhondje

Kooikerhondjes are sweet, loyal dogs. They do not use their voices very often, but when they do, you will know it is for a reason. These smart dogs will usually let you know when a stranger is near and are good readers of body language. If after surveying the stranger they deem trustworthy, Kooikerhondjes will be friendly. They are sensitive souls that do best when socialized with people and pets as puppies. These dogs can also be chewers, so a combination of early training and plenty of exercise is needed to correct this behavior. Kooikerhondjes aim to please their owners and will listen – especially when there is a treat involved.

Kooikerhondjes are striking dogs with a signature white blaze on their face. They have a long, silky coat that needs regular brushing to remove dead hairs and reduce fur on the furniture. As with all dogs with weather-resistant coats, be careful with over-bathing, which can strip the natural oils that keep their coat healthy.

Kooikerhondjes will make good use of a large backyard, racing around and loving life. Be sure to keep Kooikerhondjes in a secure area to play, as they have a tendency to wander if there’s something to investigate. Kooikerhondjes are quiet, loving dogs. They can be affectionate companions for little ones who have been taught to pet their dogs gently.

Kooikerhondjes love the outdoors  and are excellent swimmers and retrievers. You might try throwing a ball for them to fetch out of a pool or lake, which is also an easy way to tire them out! These dogs are good listeners and can also excel at agility and obedience. Overall, a well-exercised Kooikerhondje is a happy Kooikerhondje!
