Overview

Nederlandse Kooikerhondjes are duck hunters from Holland. These pretty pups have been around for hundreds of years and can be seen in iconic paintings. Nederlandse Kooikerhondjes are quiet dogs and make a great match for a calmer person or family.

Nederlandse Kooikerhondjes were born to duck hunt. Originally bred in Holland, they have been a popular breed for hundreds of years, and their pretty faces can even be seen in some famous Rembrant artwork. These quiet dogs are affectionate, sensitive souls who pay close attention to a person’s tone of voice and body language and can take a moment to warm up when meeting someone new. On the other hand, Kooikerhondjes love being around people and are playful.

Temperament and Behavior

Kooikerhondjes are sweet, loyal dogs. They do not use their voices very often, but when they do, you will know it is for a reason. These smart dogs will usually let you know when a stranger is near and are good readers of body language. If after surveying the stranger they deem trustworthy, Kooikerhondjes will be friendly. They are sensitive souls that do best when socialized with people and pets as puppies. These dogs can also be chewers, so a combination of early training and plenty of exercise is needed to correct this behavior. Kooikerhondjes aim to please their owners and will listen – especially when there is a treat involved.

Coat & Grooming

Kooikerhondjes are striking dogs with a signature white blaze on their face. They have a long, silky coat that needs regular brushing to remove dead hairs and reduce fur on the furniture. As with all dogs with weather-resistant coats, be careful with over-bathing, which can strip the natural oils that keep their coat healthy.

Lifestyle & Living Conditions

Kooikerhondjes will make good use of a large backyard, racing around and loving life. Be sure to keep Kooikerhondjes in a secure area to play, as they have a tendency to wander if there’s something to investigate. Kooikerhondjes are quiet, loving dogs. They can be affectionate companions for little ones who have been taught to pet their dogs gently.

Exercise & Activity

Kooikerhondjes love the outdoors  and are excellent swimmers and retrievers. You might try throwing a ball for them to fetch out of a pool or lake, which is also an easy way to tire them out! These dogs are good listeners and can also excel at agility and obedience. Overall, a well-exercised Kooikerhondje is a happy Kooikerhondje!
