Overview
Norwich Terriers are one of the smallest terriers, but what they lack in size they make up for in personality. All these dogs want is your love and attention. They’re happiest with families that enjoy spending time at home, playing, and doing activities that appeal to their natural hunting instinct.
With endless hugs and kisses to share, Norwich Terriers are a sweet breed who loves to give and receive affection. They’re one of the smallest terriers, but their big personalities outweigh their size. These family-friendly dogs are courageous and can’t get enough attention. Their ideal day involves playing with family, greeting visitors, and keeping an eye on rabbits in the backyard. Norwich Terriers are laid back most of the time, but once their hunting drive kicks in, nearby rodents don’t stand a chance. When they aren’t keeping an eye out for prey, you can find these pups playing with kids, digging in the yard, or snuggling up for a hug.
Temperament and Behavior
Norwich Terriers are happy-go-lucky pups who crave attention. While some terriers are cautious around strangers, this breed is eager to meet and play with just about anyone. Norwich Terriers are easygoing most of the time, but their natural prey drive and curiosity keep them on constant alert. They’ll let you know if they sense danger, but with their 10-pound bodies and little yaps, they’re unlikely to scare anyone but themselves.
Coat & Grooming
Like many other terriers, the Norwich Terrier’s shaggy coat is made of rough, wiry hair. They also have a thicker “mane” around the neck and shoulders. These dogs shed frequently, especially as they get older. They need to be brushed weekly and stripped twice a year to keep their coats in good condition.
Lifestyle & Living Conditions
Norwich Terriers are family-friendly dogs that are suitable for homes or apartments. They get along great with kids, adults, and most other pets, but because they have a natural instinct to hunt, they aren’t a good fit for homes with rabbits, birds, or rodents. Norwich Terriers love to be around people and hate being alone for long periods of time. They’re happiest with families that are home a lot and can give them plenty of attention.
Exercise & Activity
Norwich Terriers have moderate exercise needs. A few short walks or play sessions each day will keep them happy. These pups also are talented at agility, obedience training, earthdog tests, and tracking, which appeals to their hunting instincts. Their prey drive will also lead them to run after animals, so whenever you’re walking a Norwich Terrier, keep it on a leash or in a fenced area to avoid an escape.
