Overview

The Old Danish Pointing Dog is a medium-sized hunting dog from Denmark. They are excellent trackers, pointers, and retrievers. This breed is full of energy in the field and full of love at home, making them ideal companions for a hunting family who also wants a loving pal.

The Old Danish Pointing Dog, sometimes referred to as the Old Danish Chicken Dog, is a hunting breed developed in Denmark. These dogs are calm, sweet, and eager to please. They are expert trackers, flushers, and game retrievers. An Old Danish Pointer is happiest when you take them hunting, but they are also happy to give you lots of love while running and playing around your home.

Temperament and Behavior

The Old Danish Pointing Dog is a friend of almost everyone they meet. They’ll usually alert you if a stranger is approaching, but they’re more likely to beg that stranger for affection than scare them off. These outgoing dogs love the outdoors and are happiest when they get to spend lots of time playing outside, especially when it's hunting time!

Coat & Grooming

The Old Danish Pointing Dog has a short, easy-care coat. They shed, but not a particularly large amount. Running a brush through their coat about once a week will help keep their coat healthy and cut back on the hair you find around your place.

Lifestyle & Living Conditions

An Old Danish Pointing Dog fits best in a home where there’s a good-sized, safe place to play outdoors. They can adapt to living outdoors, but prefer a situation where they can live inside and have easy access to a backyard or woods. They don’t usually do well in apartments, as they need lots of exercise. Old Danish Pointing Dogs are friendly and get along with most other animals. They especially love being around children. If you have cats, it’s best if the animals are raised together, but even older Old Danish Pointing Dogs can learn to befriend a feline.

Exercise & Activity

The Old Danish Pointing Dog is quite the ball of energy. They need vigorous daily exercise, preferably where they can run around and follow their nose, sniffing out any critters that may have come by. If you take them hunting, the Old Danish Pointing Dog’s heart will soar,  but they also enjoy long walks, jogs, or hikes.
