"YOU’RE HOME! This is the best day of my life!"
Breed Profile
Pomeranians lived in the lap of luxury among British royalty in the 1800s. The times may have changed, but their personalities have not. Poms still enjoy being doted on, but will shower you with love in return.

Behavior

Pomeranians are lively balls of fur. Cheery, amusing and curious, there is never a dull day with one of these pups around. Poms are smart yet strong-willed. But, here’s a secret, they can easily be coaxed with a treat. Without proper socialization, some Poms can be cautious and even nippy toward strangers and other dogs. Pomeranians also like to bark and will let you know when someone is at the door. They aim to please, though, and will listen to a strong leader when told to quiet down. One thing you should know about Pomeranians is that they will never turn down a day of pampering! They love to be primped, fluffed, and outfitted.

Coat

Being this pretty doesn’t come easy. Pomeranians require some upkeep to maintain their good looks. Poms have a thick double coat that requires daily brushing. These dogs do shed and daily maintenance will reduce the amount of fur left behind on the couch. These dogs should see a professional groomer every 4-6 weeks for perfectly coiffed hair. This breed is also prone to tooth decay, so it’s recommended to brush their teeth a few times each week to ensure they’ll keep their full set of chompers into their old age.

Lifestyle

Although Pomeranians may be high maintenance in the grooming department, they are low-key when it comes to their living environment. Indoor dogs, they are pretty adaptable and can live in most settings. Poms are extremely playful and busy all day long but don’t require excessive exercise to keep them content. They do, however, require plenty of attention. Pomeranians are loving family members who are best matched with older, gentle children due to their small, delicate bodies.

Activity

Pomeranians enjoy daily walks and lots of playtime with their families. These pups may be small, but they can sure hop, skip, and jump with the best of them. They thrive in doggie sports like agility, obedience, and flyball. Pomeranians also enjoy showing off their good looks as competitive show dogs.

About the Pomeranian

Pomeranians have been popular pups for centuries. A favorite among British royalty in the 1800s, they are related to large sled and herding dogs but were bred to be the perfect lapdog. As soon as you walk through the door, these fluffy, scruffy companions will hop to their back legs and wave their hands in the air. It’s like having a small cheering section in your own home! Pomeranians also tend to show their excitement or announce someone’s arrival with a few small barks. Consistent training and leadership can keep this from getting out of hand. It’s hard not to smile when you’re around a Pom!
