Overview

The Romanian Mioritic Shepherd, also known as the Ciobanesc Romanesc Mioritic, is an excellent herding dog and wonderful companion. They form very loyal bonds with their owners and families, making them great watch dogs. Hard to find outside of Romania, they were bred to guard over flocks on the mountains. They are loyal to their families and love children.

The Romanian Mioritic Shepherd dog is a large sheep and cattle dog, known for being hard worker, and having strong, muscular bodies. The Mioritic is a rare breed, and they have been known historically as mountain herd protectors, guardians of flocks. They will also guard over their families and become very attached to their owners. Mioritics make excellent companions and will need to keep their masters in sight frequently. They go all the way when protecting those they are attached to, making them very dependable house pets. They are calm but also very courageous. They have an inherent urge to protect their human family and are wary of strangers.

Temperament and Behavior

This breed is popular among the mountains of Romania and especially known for guarding their flocks and families. This means they will stay loyal to their masters, no matter what. Mioritics are calm and incorruptible and very courageous against possible predators. They are naturally wary of strangers, but they are good-natured around children. Training a Mioritic is only possible once owners have established relationships with them, solidifying that loyalty early on. Once established as a member of the family, they’ll need to stay with you for life.

Coat & Grooming

The Mioritic has a long, thick, fluffy coat, which is meant to withstand cold, mountain temperatures. Their coats may be all white, or some white with play grey or beige patches, or grey all over. Although their coats look massive, they aren’t hard to maintain. Puppies are different than adults, though, and require extensive maintenance. The coat must be brushed for at least 10 minutes everyday. As the dog gets older, less grooming is needed. Bathe a Mioritic rarely, as their coats take more than a day to dry.

Lifestyle & Living Conditions

These calm, yet courageous dogs are fantastic family pups, provided you can find one, as they are rarely known outside of Romania. Mioritic dogs are happiest where they can have space to run freely. These dogs will not be happy in an apartment, because of their extremely huge amounts of endurance and power. They are the best fit for a family in the country or in a home with a large, fenced-in yard. They are loyal and protective of their families, so strangers will never win over a Mioritic. However, they are very disciplined and respond well to commands of their master.

Exercise & Activity

The Mioritic enjoys being active and running freely. They are bred to protect flock and family, so the family will need to be the ones to provide this dog with lots of activity. They are powerful dogs and will make up their own exercises, so they need to be fenced in, while they run and play.
