Overview

The Russo-European Laika is a very active and territorial hunting dog, that loves nothing more than to be outside on the hunting trail. They are medium-sized and recognized for their fluffy coats. These dogs love their families and enjoy their role of protector and guardian.

The Russo-European Laika is a popular hunting dog in Russia and Northern Europe. These dogs are bred with a very strong hunting instinct and a great sense of direction. They are efficient at trailing and treeing game. They are also friendly and affectionate toward children and loyal to their families, acting as watchdog extraordinaire towards any stranger they meet. Their fluffy coats protect them from harsh environments, and they need more than a little exercise - tons of it!

Temperament and Behavior

The Russo-European Laika isn't a lap dog, but they will make the perfect outdoor companion. They are happiest when they've had a few hours of outdoor daily exercise. The Russo-European Laika will become accustomed to humans with proper training. They are extremely tolerant of children and fiercely loyal to their families, acting as guard dogs against any stranger. They are very territorial and will alert you of anything amiss.

Coat & Grooming

The Russo-European Laika has a harsh and straight coat, dense undercoat, and long top coat that protects them from harsh Russian winters. They range in color from entirely black to entirely white, with gray, ticking, and red or brown brindle coloring occasionally. They require minimal grooming and only occasional brushing, since their rough coats self-clean very quickly.

Lifestyle & Living Conditions

The Russo-European Laika is a high energy dog who was bred for all-day hunts. They do best in families who are very active and who can provide them with access to the great outdoors, for running, playing, and hunting. They are extremely loyal to one master and will be affectionate with their families when properly trained. They are extremely tolerant of children and can make lifelong family companions.

Exercise & Activity

The Russo-European Laika is a highly active dog who will do best in a rural setting with an active family. They will be energetic, loyal, and affectionate if their daily physical needs are met. If you're not working them out several hours each day on the trail, a couple of hours of daily exercise is important for this breed.
