Overview
Schipperkes are known as “little devils” because of their curious, mischievous nature. They’re wonderful family dogs who bond quickly with kids. However, they also march to the beat of their own drum and get easily distracted by rodents in the backyard, a new toy, or a hole that’s calling their name.
Schipperkes are smart, energetic watchdogs whose favorite pastimes are digging in the yard, keeping an eye on their home, and playing sports that stimulate their mind and body. They love their families and consider it their job to protect them. However, they’re also quite independent and mischievous, leading them to spend just as much time investigating what’s going on in the backyard as they do hanging out with you. Schipperkes adore kids and often become close companions with them. If you can keep these dogs busy and be their best friend, they’ll be sure to offer the same in return.
Temperament and Behavior
Schipperkes are alert and loyal and have an insatiable curiosity. Their friendliness and high energy will impress even the most skeptical owner. They’ve been serving as watchdogs for hundreds of years and still enjoy the job today. Schipperkes love keeping an eye on everyone, and they’ll go into protector mode if needed. These dogs love their families but have a mind of their own. Without proper training, they’re known to dig, run after animals, and bark the night away.
Coat & Grooming
Schipperkes have thick double coats of straight, harsh hair on the outside and softer hair underneath. Their fur is medium-length and shouldn’t be kept too long or short. Schipperkes may look like they need a lot of grooming, but brushing them once a week (or more often when they shed twice each year) and bathing them once in a while will do the trick.
Lifestyle & Living Conditions
Schipperkes are positive dogs that are fond of kids. If trained and socialized, they often latch on to children and become their best friend. These pups are great with children of all ages, but they may be more reserved around strangers (a testament to their watchdog nature). Schipperkes are notorious diggers and runners, so make sure they have plenty of room to play, a securely fenced yard, and are never allowed off leash. While they love being outdoors, their primary space should be indoors, where they can stay cool and be around people.
Exercise & Activity
The Schipperke is an active dog that likes walking, running, and sports that use their brain. They need at least one long walk each day, but they won’t complain if you want a jogging buddy too. Schipperkes are very smart and have a talent for dog sports, like agility, rally, and flyball. Without enough exercise, you can expect this pup to get their energy out by digging holes in the backyard or having a field day with the living room furniture.
