Overview

Slovac Cuvacs have been protectors of sheep and other livestock in the Slovakian Alps for centuries. They are tough guardians when working and sweet shepherds when with their family. Slovac Cuvacs perk up around children and are extremely patient playmates!

From the Slovakian Alps, Slovac Cuvacs are fearless guardians. They will face off against wolves and other large prey in order to protect their flock. As pets, they are naturally wary of strangers and make good guard dogs. When not in “work” mode, Slovac Cuvacs are sweet sheepdogs who have a special patience and love for children. Loyal, good-natured, and affectionate, they are happiest as part of a family!

Temperament and Behavior

Slovac Cuvacs are natural protectors who bond deeply with their family and will be alert when new people visit. As with all dogs with strong protective instincts, early training and socialization is always recommended. This will also help break through the Slovac Cuvac’s stubborn streak. They have high exercise requirements and much unwanted behavior can be corrected with longer daily runs and additional activities. As a family member, Slovac Cuvacs are calm, devoted, and very affectionate. They adore children and generally have a pretty good tolerance for any tugging and twisting from little ones.

Coat & Grooming

Slovac Cuvacs facial expressions are punctuated in black – black nose, black lips, and dark eyes – against their distinctive all-white fur. They have a dense, wavy coat that tends to shed quite a bit. You might need to put together a grooming tool kit for these sweet dogs. Be sure to include a metal-toothed comb, which can help pull out the dead undercoat and reduce shedding. You can expect to brush these dogs every few days to keep their long locks from matting.

Lifestyle & Living Conditions

With flocks to protect and lands to roam, a Slovac Cuvac’s ideal lifestyle would be to live with a family on a farm. If that doesn’t describe your situation, a family with a large backyard will make these shepherds happy as well. If raised together, Slovac Cuvacs also can live with other dogs.

Exercise & Activity

Slovac Cuvac have a seemingly endless supply of energy. In addition to directing flocks of livestock and chasing off predators, these shepherds will also enjoy long walks and hikes with their owner. Some have even been known to make excellent search and rescue dogs.
