Standard Schnauzer
Breed Group: working
"I may be small, but I’ll take up lots of room in your heart!"
Breed Profile
Standard Schnauzers are little dogs with big personalities. They’re known for their expressive faces with beards and eyebrows that tell you how they feel at every moment. Schnauzers live best indoors with loving, devoted families who enjoy spending time with their non-human companions.
Behavior
Standard Schnauzers have strong ambition and even tempers. Their bodies may be small, but their brains are large and thirsty to learn. These dogs make courageous and entertaining pets, but they can be mischievous when left alone. Keep them entertained, and they’ll be devoted companions that bring you joy and keep an eye on your home.
Coat
Standard Schnauzers have a wiry outer coat that ranges from solid black to salt-and-pepper colored. Their outer coat is accompanied by a soft, thick undercoat for warmth. Standard Schnauzers’ most prominent feature is their facial hair. It hangs longer from the chin and face, making a full beard and eyebrows. Despite their long coats, Standard Schnauzers don’t shed much. However, they do need regular brushing and professional trimming to keep their coats healthy and tangle-free.
Lifestyle
Standard Schnauzers are wonderful friends for children. Once socialized, they get along great with most people and other animals too. However, Standard Schnauzers are cautious around strangers and can be destructive when left alone for too long. Normally, they’re obedient as long as they get enough exercise and attention. These dogs are happiest indoors (whether in a home or apartment) and behave best when trained as puppies using positive reinforcement. They may bark at times but are generally quieter than other Schnauzers.
Activity
Standard Schnauzers need daily exercise but nothing excessive. They particularly love swimming, fetching, and running. However, this breed gets bored with routine, so be sure to change up their exercise once in a while to make sure they stay entertained. Schnauzers are suitable for apartments thanks to their small size, but their exercise needs may be greater if they live in more confined areas.

About the Standard Schnauzer
Standard Schnauzers are feisty and fiery little creatures with big personalities to complement their short statures. They need love, attention, and adoration to keep them occupied and excited. These mischievous pups get devious when they’re bored, but they don’t mind an easy night in after a busy day. Their earnest outlook on life gives them a certain spunk that’s hard to find in other breeds. Standard Schnauzers are not very social, but once they get to know strangers, their friendliness shines through. Grooming is key to keep their coats in good shape, so they’ll need some extra TLC when it comes to brushing and trimming.
