Teddy Roosevelt Terrier
Breed Group: terrier
"The squirrel stops here!"
Breed Profile
Teddy Roosevelt Terriers were a favorite of President Roosevelt and are related to the Rat Terrier. These dogs are energetic and cheery, but their curiosity can get the best of them at times and place them in funny situations. Teddy Roosevelt Terriers are loyal family members who bring the laughs!
Behavior
There’s never a boring day with a Teddy Roosevelt Terrier around! They are cheery, lively, and very curious. These dogs are smart yet stubborn. Firm, consistent handling works best, but no amount of training will help their behavior if they are not getting proper exercise. Digging, barking, and chewing are all byproducts of a bored Teddy Roosevelt Terrier. These terriers are very loyal to their people, and if a guest is at the door, they will alert you immediately. Unfortunately, they may also require a warming-up period before they decide whether or not they like this new person.
Coat
Teddy Roosevelt Terriers must be solid white or have some white in their coat if bi-color or tri-color. They’ll need regular brushing to keep their coat looking shiny and healthy, but they only need bathed when noticeably dirty or smelly.
Lifestyle
Teddy Roosevelt Terriers are happy in most settings as long as they have access to an outdoor space. They are known for their rat- and squirrel-chasing skills and they won’t hesitate to show them off. Be sure that their outdoor play area is secure, and keep them on a leash when on walks. If raised together, Teddy Roosevelt Terriers are fun, friendly companions for children, cats, and other dogs.
Activity
Teddy Roosevelt Terriers might be on the smaller side, but they sure do have spunk and stamina. These dogs should get up to an hour of exercise each day and will happily be your walking or jogging buddy. Agility and obedience activities are great options for these smart dogs, as they will have the opportunity to get mental exercise as well.
