"C'mon! It's this way!"
Breed Profile
Transylvanian Hounds are hardworking hunters of big game. They are reliable in tough conditions, have a good sense of direction, and are easy to train. It’s no wonder these hunting companions were so popular among Hungarian royalty. With a happy, playful attitude, Transylvanian Hounds are a favorite for us regular families too.

Behavior

Transylvanian Hounds are smart dogs who always seem to know where they’re going. They’re good listeners. They can tell the difference between a deliveryman and a robber. And when guests are welcomed by you into the home, they will follow your lead. Transylvanian Hounds work hard and play hard. They love to have fun – especially when you’re involved! Their tail is sure to go crazy when you grab the other side of the toy and play tug-of-war. Toys might not last long with these pups, but they’ll enjoy every head-shaking moment.

Coat

Transylvanian Hounds have a short, black coat that doesn’t take much effort to maintain. Brush weekly with a bristle brush to remove dead hairs. You’ll need to increase the brushing regime when the seasons change, which is when they shed the most. Bathe as needed, and be sure to check their droopy, hound ears for signs of infection regularly.

Lifestyle

If you’re a hunter, outdoorsy person, or active family, a Transylvanian Hound might be a great match! They are high-energy and playful. Be sure you can devote some time outdoors each day to get them properly tired out. These scenthounds appreciate a large backyard, but be sure to have a fence or keep them on a leash when out and about. Their nose is in charge, and they might take off in a different direction than you.

Activity

A Transylvanian Hound’s first love is hunting. There’s nothing that will put a smile on their faces faster than being taken out in the woods on an adventure. If you’re not a hunter, you can still ignite this excitement with a long, arduous hike in a new place they can explore!

About the Transylvanian Hound

A rare breed from Hungary, Transylvanian Hounds have been skilled trackers of deer, boar, bears and wolves for centuries. Once the preferred hunting companions of royalty, these tough dogs are reliable in extreme terrain or climates. They are also easier to train than most stubborn hounds. As hard as they work, these dogs know how to have a good time. Transylvanian Hounds love a good toy fight or play wrestling and truly become one of the family. Also, if you’re someone who tends to get lost, you might consider getting a Transylvanian Hound. These medium-sized dogs have an exceptional internal compass and always seem to know their way!
