Overview

West Siberian Laikas are hardworking hunters and protectors from Siberia. Over the years, these large dogs have helped many survive the tough conditions there. West Siberian Laikas are working dogs and may need to be the only animal. They are a very healthy breed and develop a deep attachment to their owners!

West Siberian Laikas were originally used for hunting in the forests of Siberia, one of the toughest terrains in the world. These strong dogs can track and hunt game of all kinds and are also natural protectors. Today, they are still primarily kept as hunting dogs in colder regions. Domesticated Laikas still love to chase and can have some issues with dominance. If you’re active enough to bring a Laika home, they may need to be the only family pet. Of the Spitz family, West Siberian Laikas are known to keep a clean bill of health and will be devoted to their owner for life!

Temperament and Behavior

West Siberian Laikas like space and freedom! They become anxious when cooped up and will seek an escape when confined to small spaces. Barking, chewing, digging and climbing are signs of a stressed Laika. They need plenty of exercise and room, and they prefer to have a job. West Siberian Laikas are smart dogs who can sense trouble. They are protective of their owners and will use their voice to let them know when someone is nearing the home. They are wary of strangers but will be more open to them once they’re clearly welcomed by you.

Coat & Grooming

West Siberian Laikas have a striking, thick double coat that only needs to be bathed occasionally. They are seasonal shedders, so be sure to brush them every few days to remove dead hairs. This will reduce the amount of hair left behind on the floor.

Lifestyle & Living Conditions

West Siberian Laikas are devoted to their owners for life. They don’t like change when it comes to their family or environment. These large dogs appreciate an equally large outdoor space. If raised together, West Siberian Laikas can be tolerant of other dogs, but early socialization is encouraged, as they like to claim their favorite toy and will not be happy if another dog tries to do the same. West Siberian Laikas are hunters and should also be supervised around small furry pets.

Exercise & Activity

West Siberian Laikas are hardy, hardworking dogs who were originally used for hunting and survival. They have high-energy needs and like to feel useful. Hunting is still their favorite activity, but if it’s not yours, make sure to take them for long runs and give them opportunities to race around a safe, open area.
