Overview
Wire Fox Terriers were once used as rodent-hunters, but quickly moved into the hearts of families. They’re always ready for your attention, affection, or any ball you’ll throw their way. They have watchdog characteristics but are a friendly bunch. Wire Fox Terriers are very adaptable and make energetic playmates for kids and families!
Once used to push small critters out of underground hiding spots, Wire Fox Terriers are now a family favorite. They’re always ready to play and will jump for joy if you pull out a tennis ball to throw for them. They’ll give you a shout if someone is at the door but will welcome the new person right in to join the fun. Wire Fox Terriers are natural diggers, so you’ll have to be firm and consistent with them. As long as they are getting daily exercise, they do well in most settings. Athletic and happy-go-lucky, they make lively playmates for families and children!
Temperament and Behavior
Wire Fox Terriers are spirited and spunky small dogs. They have a lot of energy, which can sometimes be misinterpreted as aggression. While they should be socialized early, they are generally very friendly dogs. They’ll announce new people at the door before meeting them with a quivering, happy tail. Once used to dig rodents out from their holes, Wire Fox Terriers still like to dig love to dig. Firm and consistent training helps.
Coat & Grooming
Wire Fox Terriers have a dense, wiry coat and feature a distinctive wiry beard. They are light shedders and should be brushed every few days. It’s also recommended to take them to the professional groomers for “plucking,” which removes tufts of dead hair from their coat.
Lifestyle & Living Conditions
Wire Fox Terriers are happy in most settings. They are small and with sufficient outdoor exercise, can even live in apartments. These terriers are tough to tire out, so they are a great match for active people and families. They could be a hunter’s companion, but they are much more of a family pet these days. Well-socialized Wire Fox Terriers are friendly with other dogs and are happy to play with little ones in the backyard.
Exercise & Activity
Wire Fox Terriers love pretty much any activity and are always up for learning new tricks. They’re athletic and can jump high in the air, which makes them ace competitors in Frisbee and agility. Wire Fox Terriers also love fetching a ball out of water and taking long walks with their family.
