About
East Siberian Laika
Puppies
What's it like owning a East Siberian Laika?
The East Siberian Laika is a skilled and focused hunting dog that excels at tracking game and standing guard. These active dogs make good family pets when trained, but they enjoy being outside more than anything. Full-grown, they typically weigh 45-55 pounds and stand 20-26 inches tall.
Are East Siberian Laikas safe around children?
East Siberian Laikas are generally excellent with children of all ages. For this reason, these dogs are rarely found in the city. Being also used as sled dogs, they can run and endure for hours. They're relatively quiet and don't bark much.
How much exercise does a East Siberian Laika need?
The East Siberian Laika has high activity needs, including lots of daily exercise. These dogs are natural hunting dogs and when they aren't hunting, will still need to play and run for a few hours each day. They are bred strictly for hunting, so city and apartment life will not suit the East Siberian Laika well. Overall, their exercise needs are very high.
Do East Siberian Laikas need professional grooming?
The East Siberian Laika has a medium-long double coat with harsh guard hair and a thick and wooly undercoat. The color of their coats range from black, white, and red, to having various patterns of white, red, grey, black, brown, or brindle through their coats. They need minimal grooming though, with just occasional brushing. Grooming-wise, this breed is low-maintenance.
Can a East Siberian Laika live in an apartment?
East Siberian Laikas are best suited for a house with a good-sized yard. The East Siberian Laika has high energy and a need for being outdoors. They prefer a rural environment where they can run and hunt and play. They are highly trainable and eager to learn.

Visit or Video Call the Breeder
Visit in person if possible, or request a live video call to meet the puppy, see its living conditions, and meet the mom. Ask to see where the dogs eat, sleep, and play.
Get a Vet Exam Immediately
Have a vet examine the puppy within two days of bringing it home, even if it seems healthy.
Request Complete Health Records
Ask for vaccination records, deworming history, and vet exam results. For purebreds, ask for parent health clearances.
Get Everything in Writing
Written contract with health guarantees, return/refund policy, and spay/neuter terms. Verbal promises are unenforceable.
Use Secure Payment Methods
Pay with a credit card or another traceable method that offers buyer protection. Avoid wire transfers, crypto, or gift cards, which are difficult to recover.
Verify Breeder Credentials
Check USDA license, state breeder license, breed club memberships, and reviews. Ask for buyer references.
Know What to Look For
A trustworthy breeder welcomes visits, specializes in one or two breeds, prices fairly, and gives you time to decide without pressure.
Know Your State's Laws
Some states have lemon laws; others rely on contract law. Know your rights before you buy.
