Basset Artesien Normand

Breed Group: hound
"I may look sad and serious on the outside, but inside, I’m as happy as can be"
Breed Profile
The Basset Artesien Normand has similar looks and characteristics to their popular Basset Hound relative but in a slightly smaller package. These pups make great hunters, family pets, and companions. Their nose may take them in lots of different directions, but they’ll always find their way back to you.

Behavior

Basset Artesien Normands are cheerful and curious dogs that love hunting by day and snuggling by night. They have a keen nose and a deep bark to let you know when they smell something good. The Basset Artesien Normand makes a good watchdog and will bark whenever a stranger approaches, but once they realize that the person doesn’t pose danger, they're quick to give a warm welcome. These dogs are highly intelligent and quick learners, so if you ever need to correct bad habits, they’ll be happy to trade bratty behavior for treats and kisses.

Coat

The Basset Artesien Normand has a short, smooth coat. These dogs share the same colors as most Basset breeds: tri-color (fawn, black, and white) or bi-color (fawn and white). Their fur doesn’t shed much and is easy to groom. Brush them once in a while to remove loose hair, give them a bath when they roll in something stinky, and keep their long ears clean at all times.

Lifestyle

Basset Artesien Normands are family dogs that can get along with just about anyone. They’re gentle with kids, love being part of a pack, can play nicely with cats and other pets if they’re socialized from a young age. This breed will be happy in an apartment or home as long as they get enough activity and companionship.

Activity

Basset Artesien Normands come from a hunting background, so they need to be active every day. Because of their short legs, walking or low-impact activities are better for them than running long distances or jumping. They enjoy taking long walks and tracking scents. They’re known to dart off after interesting smells, though, so keep them on a leash in open areas.

About the Basset Artesien Normand

The Basset Artesien Normand is slightly smaller than its popular Basset Hound relative, but it shares similar looks and personality. These dogs may look depressed, but inside, they’re always in good spirits. They love being part of a pack or family and sniffing around all day long to see what they can find. When they come across something interesting, you’ll know about it by their deep, loud bark. Basset Artesien Normands are good watchdogs because of their alertness and barking, but they’re more likely to kiss strangers than bite them. This breed’s outgoing and affectionate personality makes them perfect for families who want a cute and cuddly companion.
