Overview

Bavarian Mountain Hounds are hunting dogs that smell prey from a mile away. They love roaming and taking in all of nature’s smells, but only if their owner is close behind. While they may seem tough when they’re on the hunt, these pups are cozy companions behind the scenes.

The Bavarian Mountain Hound is a descendent of the Bracken dog, which was known for its tracking and trailing talents. They are slightly smaller scenthounds that originated in the mountains of Germany and the Czech Republic. In addition to their hunting skills, they’re still popular companions in that region. These dogs will never let a smell go unnoticed. Their keen nose and strong prey drive may make them seem aggressive, but they’re lovers on the inside. Bavarian Mountain Hounds enjoy living in rural areas where they can roam around all day and be right by your side at night.

Temperament and Behavior

Bavarian Mountain Hounds are laid-back, quiet dogs who love staying glued to their family’s side. These hounds have strong hunting instincts and good noses. When they smell something good, it’s tough to tear their attention away until they find the source. Bavarian Mountain Hounds are rugged dogs that are fast, brave, and agile. They need more attention and training than other pups, but they’ll be sure to give you plenty of love in return.

Coat & Grooming

The Bavarian Mountain Hound has a short coat that is dense and coarse. Their fur is typically fawn, tan, deep red, reddish grey, brindle, or black, with a black face mask. These dogs are average shedders that don’t need much grooming. A good brushing once in a while is all they need to keep their coat in good shape.

Lifestyle & Living Conditions

Bavarian Mountain Hounds bond quickly with their owners and like being around children and other dogs. This breed was created as hunters, so they do best in rural areas rather than the city. With training and socialization, they can get along with cats too, but small animals and rodents set off their prey drive.

Exercise & Activity

The Bavarian Mountain Hound is a hunter at heart, so they need exercise to keep them busy. These dogs don’t do well when they’re cooped up in the house all day, so be sure to take them for walks, hikes, and other activities that engage their senses. Keep them on a leash in open areas, though, as they’re known to dart off after interesting smells.
