The Drever is a skilled scenthound that loves to work. They are calm and friendly, but prefer to zone in with their hyperfocus on the hunting trail.
The Swedish Drever, also known as the Swedish Dachsbracke, is a rare scenthound with an incredibly powerful nose and aptitude for hunting. These dogs are short-legged and medium-sized, but they're powerful and bred to be hard working hunting dogs. They are always alert and will show this by the constant sway of their tails. The Drever is friendly, calm, and loves humans, but they need intense training to show them all the proper behaviors.
Temperament and Behavior
The Drever's best fit is as a hunting dog rather than a family pet, but they do love their humans. They are obedient and alert, and they will stick by your side on the hunting trail, but don’t let this dog boss you around; the owner of a Drever needs to know how to handle them. On the trail, they excel at coaxing their prey towards their masters. They aren’t always a good fit as a family dog unless they’ve had a good amount of training as a puppy.
Coat & Grooming
The Drevers coat is short, flat, and close-fitting. They are usually a combination of brown or tan and black with white markings and occasional brindle coloring on their backs. They are average shedders and require a weekly brushing to keep the dead hairs at bay.
Lifestyle & Living Conditions
The Drever is a working dog, full of stamina, that is happiest when given plenty of work, play time, and exercise. Training and a firm but fair master is essential in training a Drever, so they will always know their role in the human pack. They can do well acclimating to apartment life if they are provided lots of opportunities to run. Otherwise, a home with a yard is great for these busy dogs. Early socialization is vital for these dogs to get along with other pets and children.
Exercise & Activity
Drevers are workers, and they need to keep busy. They love to run, but they aren’t as fast as some of their scenthound cousins. The hunting trail is definitely the place for them, so if you can indulge in a trip outside regularly, Drevers will lead the way. Otherwise, keeping a Drever busy with other outdoor doggie sports will help you have a happy dog that will avoid destructive behaviors.
