Overview
Hungarian Greyhounds are rooted in history; some say the breed was first seen more than 1,000 years ago. A combination of speed and stamina make them excellent hunters. With proper exercise and early socialization, Hungarian Greyhounds can also make a great addition to the family.
The Hungarian Greyhound has been around for the ages. Originally bred in Hungary, some say their beginnings may date back more than 1,000. Their powerful legs help take them the distance. Although the Greyhound may be king when it comes to speed, the Hungarian Greyhound takes the crown for stamina and long distances. Simply put, these dogs just don’t get tired. Once used to hunt quick little animals like fox and hare, these rare dogs are now more commonly seen on the racing track or in the show ring. With proper exercise and early socialization, they can also make a great addition to the family.
Temperament and Behavior
Hungarian Greyhounds are loyal companions and can be protective of their family. They may take a minute to warm up to strangers and do have some watchdog ability. They are quick both mentally and physically. If their exercise needs are not met, you can quickly have an unhappy – and somewhat destructive – dog on your hands. In addition to daily activity, early training and socialization can certainly curb this behavior.
Coat & Grooming
Hungarian Greyhounds might be high maintenance in the exercise department, but when it comes to grooming, they are a pretty easy bunch. Their short, smooth coat comes in a variety of different colors and sheds very minimally. A light brushing once a week will take care of any dead hairs and keep their coat looking shiny and healthy.
Lifestyle & Living Conditions
Hungarian Greyhounds can live in most households as long as they are getting their fill of daily exercise. A large, fenced yard will also make these dogs happy. Hungarian Greyhounds love children and other dogs. Overall, these are active dogs that do best with equally active owners.
Exercise & Activity
It can be hard to keep up with a Hungarian Greyhound. To give yourself a boost, hop on a bicycle and have them run alongside you on a long leash. These dogs need to stretch their legs on a daily basis, so be sure to give them at least two hours of intense exercise per day - preferably something running-related.
