Hygen Hound

Breed Group: hound
"I’m the happiest hound around!"
Breed Profile
Hygen Hounds are originally from Norway and were bred to hunt in freezing, arctic weather. Good thing they have their dense, weatherproof coat! These speedy dogs have a lot of endurance and must have daily exercise to stay happy. They can make both great hunting companions and family members.

Behavior

Hygen Hounds can run for miles and miles. They can also seek your attention for hours and hours. As with many high-energy, intelligent breeds, early socialization and training is always helpful. Specifically with the Hygen Hound, it’s important that their suspicion of strangers and watchdog behavior doesn’t turn into unwanted aggression. Every hound is different. Some Hygen Hounds can be more dominant than others. Overall, these dogs desire daily activity and affection. They are known to be loving, lively, and gentle with their family.

Coat

The waterproof coat of a Hygen Hound is helpful when weathering harsh arctic temperatures and terrain. It is not recommended to bathe these dogs too often, as it could strip natural oils and nutrients from their coat. However, you should brush their coat every week to help remove dead hairs. Hygen Hounds also have typically long hound ears. They should be checked regularly for possible infections.

Lifestyle

Hygen Hounds are experts at running long distances, so they thrive in an area with a lot of acreage. They make a great companion for someone who enjoys running or the outdoors. Hygen Hounds do not fare well in apartment-style living or with owners who cannot keep up with their fast-paced lifestyle.

Activity

These dogs lead active lives. The happiest Hygen Hounds are running around for more than two hours each day. They have great endurance, so they are more of a running buddy than a walking companion. Better yet, strap on some rollerblades or hop on a bike and have your Hygen Hound run alongside you. They will love having to keep up with you for a change!

About the Hygen Hound

Originally bred in Norway, Hygen Hounds are a working breed used to hunt in arctic environments. So, well, it takes a lot to tire these hounds out. They are generally a happy, lively bunch, but can give strangers an earful. They raise alarms with their loud bark and make a good watchdog. Hygen Hounds work closely as a hunting companion but bond even closer as a family member. These medium-sized dogs are also gentle with children.
