Overview
Istrian Coarse-Haired Hounds are from a mountainous peninsula in Croatia. Their favorite thing to do is hunt. Rabbit, fox, and wild boar are a few of the animals they like to chase. Istrian Coarse-Haired Hounds are commonly seen as hunting companions rather than family members. However, they do develop a close bond with their owners.
Originally from the Istrian peninsula of Croatia, Istrian Coarse-Haired Hounds are hunters. Hardworking hunters, at that. They will track rabbits, foxes, and wild boar up the side of a mountain or into a ground hole without a second thought. Istrian Coarse-Haired Hounds are a mix of their short-haired relative and a scruffy scenthound. These wiry hounds tend to be a bit larger in size than their short-haired cousins too. Hard to train, Istrian Coarse-Haired Hounds are more commonly seen as hunting companions than family members. However, they do develop a close bond with their owner – especially someone who is on the trail with them day in and day out.
Temperament and Behavior
Istrian Coarse-Haired Hounds are both even-mannered and stubborn. They require ongoing training and reminders and even then, may not listen. It’s best to start socializing and training with Istrian Coarse-Haired Hounds early. These lively dogs are outgoing and tend to only act aggressively toward the animals they are hunting. When on the trail, they can also be pretty loud. Inside the home and out of steam, though, they become calm companions.
Coat & Grooming
Istrian Coarse-Haired Hounds feature a white coat and orange spots and speckles that can be rough to the touch. Their wiry, tousled hair requires daily brushing to keep them looking their best. Be sure not to bathe these dogs too often, though, because it could strip their coat of the natural oils that keep it weatherproof. Their undercoat gets denser in the winter months and does shed.
Lifestyle & Living Conditions
Istrian Coarse-Haired Hounds like to take a break when indoors but still require daily aerobic exercise to be content. They thrive in places where they can be let outdoors to run around, which can be hard to do in a city environment. Although they do well with other dogs, these hunting hounds may not be as well-behaved around small animals.
Exercise & Activity
The Istrian Coarse-Haired Hound’s favorite activity is hunting, but they do excel at other activities as well. Agility courses are a great way to burn off some energy. It usually takes a couple hours to tire these hardworking hounds out.
