The Poitevin is an aggressive French hunting dog that was originally bred to help cut down on a large wolf population. Now, the Poitevin is usually used for hunting deer and rabbits. If you’re looking for an excellent hunting dog that will never get tired, the Poitevin could be a good choice. However, do not think of this breed as a family pet. They are very difficult to train and are extremely wary of strangers. This breed is useful for hunters, but unless you plan to take them hunting, the Poitevin may not be for you.
Temperament and Behavior
Poitevins are pack dogs and prefer the company of dogs to the company of humans. They live to hunt together in a pack and nothing makes them happier. Poitevins are extremely wary of strangers and are often aggressive toward people they do not know. These dogs are extremely difficult to train and require an owner with extensive dog-ownership experience. Furthermore, the Poitevin barks and howls to the other members of their pack, which can be an irritant to neighbors.
Coat & Grooming
The Poitevin has an easy-care, short coat. You should brush their coat at least once a week to remove dead hair, distribute natural oils, and remove any thorns or dirt they’ve acquired while out in the field.
Lifestyle & Living Conditions
Families who live in rural areas and do lots of hunting are really the only fit for the Poitevin. They require lots of space and extensive daily exercise to be happy. Poitevins are not good with children or with cats and other small pets. They do love other dogs, however, and will likely get along with most canine companions that aren’t tiny. Poitevins are happy living outdoors as long as they have the proper shelter to keep them protected from the elements.
Exercise & Activity
Hunting, hunting, and more hunting is what the Poitevin craves. They require extensive amounts of daily exercise to be at their best behavior. Let them play in a safe area on your farm, or take them out for hunts or long hikes, and they will be at their happiest.
