Overview

The Schiller Hound is a fantastic running hound who possesses amazing focus and tenacity. Used exclusively for hunting, their stamina and endurance prove to be useful tools for avid hunting fans and masters.

The Schiller Hound is a medium-sized running hound, renowned for their abilities to track, sniff, and corner critters. They are tenacious and determined, completely oblivious to anything else while they're in pursuit on the hunting trail. They are a beautiful breed - tan, with black saddle markings - who appreciate the rural lifestyle. They tolerate the cold well, and thanks to their Swedish heritage, it's in their nature to enjoy playing in the snow.

Temperament and Behavior

The Schiller Hound is a vivacious, active, and obedient hunting companion. They are good-natured, and faithful, and when trained, can be calm and friendly family companions. These hounds are independent and will not work in a pack hunting dynamic. They love their human counterparts, but they may not be a good fit for homes with other small pets, since they will try to corner them. They are famous for treeing small animals and will patiently wait for their masters to come along and finish the job.

Coat & Grooming

The coat of a Schiller Hound is thick, short, and close. It usually has a smooth and glossy sheen to it and is meant to withstand the cold. Their coats are usually brown or reddish with a black "saddle" marking over their backs. They are low maintenance, only requiring regular brushing to keep their coats free from dead hairs. Only a few bathings a year are necessary for the Schiller Hound.

Lifestyle & Living Conditions

The great outdoors is the ideal life for the Schiller Hound. They won't do well as lap dogs and need a great deal of daily exercise to keep their minds and bodies fit and active. They are best suited for an experienced owner who's well equipped to train them. Since they are used exclusively for hunting, they will rarely be found within a city, preferring to burn off all of that energy out in the forest or farm.

Exercise & Activity

The Schiller Hound has stamina like an ox. They are endurance runners and will stay focused on the hunting trail, sometimes for hours. They are active and lively when focused on hunting, but when they aren't hunting, they still need lots of daily exercise. Apartment life isn't a great fit for these active dogs, who need near constant daily activity.
