Overview

A centuries-old breed, Spanish Hounds are hare-hunting experts. However, these hardworking medium-sized dogs don’t have any qualms about stepping up to larger game, like bear, either. Smart and relentless trackers, they tend to think they’re in charge and you should follow their lead. Experienced owners make the best match with this strong-willed bunch!

Around since the Middle Ages, Spanish Hounds are #1 when it comes to hunting hare. Known for these particular skills, these fearless pooches will also face big game like wild boar, deer, and bear. With their head to the ground scooping up fresh scents, these trackers will follow a trail for hours. They are relentless and almost always find what they’re looking for. If they don’t, then, well, they just haven’t finished sniffing yet. Spanish Hounds have the smarts to work on their own and might ignore you when you try to tell them what to do. They have been doing this for centuries, mind you. These dogs are not for the inexperienced owner and require strong leadership for them to actually “hear” you. Spanish Hounds usually bond closest with their human hunting partner.

Temperament and Behavior

Spanish Hounds are workers, and although they have some traits – calm, brave, loyal – that would make them a good family companion, they are not particularly interested in that sort of life. They like to be outside. They like to be using their nose… at all times. In addition to their snout, Spanish Hounds are known for using their voice to send messages. A howl that is an octave higher or lower can communicate specific details about the trail. Another thing they’re famous for? Stubbornness. Early training, strong pack leader skills, and a dose of patience are needed with these hounds. Spanish Hounds are not overly affectionate and tend to favor and pledge their devotion to one special person – usually their hunting companion.

Coat & Grooming

Spanish Hounds do not require much time or effort when it comes to grooming. Which is good for them because they’d rather be out tracking smells than getting pampered! Occasional brushing should be enough to remove dead hairs and keep their coats healthy. After a long day of hunting, Spanish Hounds might also require a bath. Just be sure to clean the inside of their long pendant ears. Not only do they get dirty easily, but leftover moisture can lead to infections.

Lifestyle & Living Conditions

If Spanish Hounds could pick their perfect human companion, it would be a hunter - in keeping with their natural lifestyle. These outdoor dogs have exceptional stamina and exercise needs, so access to land is a must. And although these hounds sometimes work in packs, they can do with or without dog buddies. They are more open to other dogs if properly socialized. As with most hunting hounds, you should keep an eye on a Spanish Hound around small, furry pets. (Unless they enjoy getting chased, that is.) Usually a one-person kind of dog, Spanish Hounds generally don’t have the patience for children.

Exercise & Activity

There are many ways to put a Spanish Hound’s nose to use. Hunting will always be their favorite activity, but these smart dogs have been seen in search and rescue efforts in recent years. They have also assisted law enforcement in the detection of drugs and bombs. Overall, if they are hard at work, these hounds are happy!
