Chinooks are a calm and gentle breed that was made in the U.S.A. They’re known for their affectionate nature and love of children, making them great companions for families. Chinooks are also active and hard-working. They love people, play, and praise—especially at the same time. Full-grown, they typically weigh 50-90 pounds and stand 22-26 inches tall.

Chinooks are generally excellent with children of all ages. Chinooks are known for being gentle with kids and other pets. You’ll often hear them communicating and “woo”-ing, which could be disruptive in shared living spaces. They're very vocal and bark quite a lot.

Chinooks were originally developed in America as sled dogs, so they love pulling and doing strenuous activities. Take your pup running, hiking, biking, or even skiing to get their energy out. They also do well at sports and agility activities. Overall, their exercise needs are very high.

Chinooks have double coats of thick hair, but they’re surprisingly easy to groom. Plan on brushing them once or twice a week, unless they’re “blowing” their coat. This process happens twice each year and lasts about three weeks. Grooming-wise, this breed is moderate.

Chinooks are best suited for a home with a yard, though they can adapt to apartment life with enough exercise. Because of their large size and activity needs, Chinooks are well-suited for homes with yards where they can run and dig. However, they can adapt to apartments if they get enough exercise. They are fairly easy to train.
