Buddy – Purebred English Setter – A Gentle Soul Looking for His Perfect Home
Born: August 26, 2025
Age: 1 year
Breed: Purebred English Setter (field-bred type)
Sex: Male – Intact
Registration: No papers
Location: Rolla, Missouri
Meet Buddy, a beautiful young English Setter with an incredibly loving heart and a personality that is every bit as special as he is.
Buddy is a true example of the gentle, affectionate, and emotionally sensitive nature that makes English Setters such wonderful companions. He is exceptionally expressive, intelligent, and deeply attached to his people. He is what we lovingly call a "Velcro dog" because he wants to be wherever his people are.
Buddy absolutely loves physical affection. He loves to cuddle, be close to you, and soak up all the attention you're willing to give him. His perfect evening would be curled up beside someone on the couch, watching television, being petted, and simply enjoying their company. He doesn't just want to live with a family; he wants to be part of one.
Buddy is also an exceptionally sensitive boy. He is very expressive with his emotions, and his feelings are easily hurt. He needs a patient, gentle person who understands that kindness, reassurance, and positive reinforcement bring out the very best in him. Harsh discipline, yelling, or physical punishment would not be appropriate for his temperament.
As a field-type English Setter, Buddy has the natural energy, curiosity, and instincts of a bird dog. He absolutely loves chasing birds, exploring, and running outdoors. His ideal home would be a farm or spacious rural property where he has plenty of room for safe, supervised exercise and opportunities to enjoy his natural instincts.
But there's another side to Buddy that's just as important. After a day of running and exploring, he wants nothing more than to come inside, cuddle up with his favorite person, and be loved. He would not be happy living as an outdoor-only dog or spending long periods without human companionship.
Buddy gets along well with other dogs and would be comfortable in a home with canine companions. He is not yet housebroken, so his new family will need to be patient and committed to helping him learn.
We are looking for a very particular kind of home for Buddy. Ideally, someone with experience with English Setters or other gentle sporting breeds who understands that these dogs need both physical activity and a great deal of emotional connection.
Buddy needs room to run, a soft place to land, and someone with a gentle heart to call his own.
Finding the right home is our highest priority. We are not looking to place him quickly, but rather to find the family who will appreciate his wonderful personality and give him the loving, secure, lifelong home he deserves.
If you believe you could be that special person or family for Buddy, please reach out and tell us about yourself, your home, and the life you could offer him.

What's the personality of a English Setter?
English Setters are kind, gentle dogs who love people, especially children. They are smart, good-natured hunting dogs who want nothing more than to track down some birds and then hang out with their family at home. Full-grown, they typically weigh 45-80 pounds and stand 23-27 inches tall.
Will a English Setter get along with my other pets?
English Setters are generally good with kids, especially when raised together. English Setters are especially fond of hunting birds, but they can fit in just fine with non-hunting families who take their dogs out for daily exercise. An English Setter that is raised with other pets usually does just fine with them, so you won’t have to get rid of any cats you already share your home with. They're moderate barkers — they'll alert you when something's up but aren't excessive.
What kind of exercise do English Setters need?
English Setters need at least 30 minutes of exercise every day and more if possible. They have an amazing sense of smell, which they will use to track down birds any time you give them the chance. When going for a walk or a bike ride, your English Setter would be more than happy to trot faithfully along your side. Overall, their exercise needs are very high.
Is a English Setter a good choice for someone with allergies?
The English Setter’s coat is long and requires brushing a few times per week whenever it’s starting to look tangled. They have feathering on their ears, chest, belly, legs, and tail, which should be kept trimmed unless you plan on showing your dog professionally. Shedding will be moderate and can be kept to a minimum with regular brushing. Grooming-wise, this breed is moderate.
What kind of home is best for a English Setter?
English Setters are best suited for a house with a good-sized yard. They do best when they live inside the house with their owners because they crave human companionship as much as we crave theirs. An English Setter that is raised with other pets usually does just fine with them, so you won’t have to get rid of any cats you already share your home with. They are fairly easy to train.
Puppy Buyer's FAQ
See Full Guide Here
Visit or Video Call the Breeder
Visit in person if possible, or request a live video call to meet the puppy, see its living conditions, and meet the mom. Ask to see where the dogs eat, sleep, and play.
Get a Vet Exam Immediately
Have a vet examine the puppy within two days of bringing it home, even if it seems healthy.
Request Complete Health Records
Ask for vaccination records, deworming history, and vet exam results. For purebreds, ask for parent health clearances.
Get Everything in Writing
Written contract with health guarantees, return/refund policy, and spay/neuter terms. Verbal promises are unenforceable.
Use Secure Payment Methods
Pay with a credit card or another traceable method that offers buyer protection. Avoid wire transfers, crypto, or gift cards, which are difficult to recover.
Verify Breeder Credentials
Check USDA license, state breeder license, breed club memberships, and reviews. Ask for buyer references.
Know What to Look For
A trustworthy breeder welcomes visits, specializes in one or two breeds, prices fairly, and gives you time to decide without pressure.
Know Your State's Laws
Some states have lemon laws; others rely on contract law. Know your rights before you buy.
