About
Skye Terrier
Puppies
What are Skye Terriers known for?
Skye Terriers are known for their long, flowy hair and easygoing personalities. They bond quickly with their families but are cautious around strangers and other pets. If you love terriers but could do without their high maintenance grooming and exercise needs, the Skye might be the perfect pup for you. Full-grown, they typically weigh 35-45 pounds and stand 9-10 inches tall.
Are Skye Terriers good family dogs?
Skye Terriers are generally okay with older children who know how to handle dogs. Skye Terriers are good companions for children, but they don’t get along very well with other dogs or cats. This breed doesn’t like being alone for long periods of time and won’t be content as backyard dogs. They're moderate barkers — they'll alert you when something's up but aren't excessive.
How do I keep a Skye Terrier physically active?
Skye Terriers may look petite and easygoing, but they have a surprising amount of strength and stamina. They love sports like agility and tracking, but they’re also perfectly happy to lie on the couch all day. A few 10-15 minute walks or play sessions each day will satisfy their needs. Overall, their exercise needs are moderate.
How much brushing and bathing does a Skye Terrier need?
Skye Terriers have a double-layered coat. The top layer is straight and long, while the bottom layer is short, wooly, and thick. Skyes can be found in black, gray, or brown and blond with dark markings on the ears, muzzle, and tail. Grooming-wise, this breed is moderate.
What living situation works for a Skye Terrier?
Skye Terriers are best suited for apartments and smaller homes. This breed doesn’t like being alone for long periods of time and won’t be content as backyard dogs. Instead, keep these dogs primarily inside your home or apartment, where they can be around people while maintaining their independence. They are moderately trainable with consistent effort.

Visit or Video Call the Breeder
Visit in person if possible, or request a live video call to meet the puppy, see its living conditions, and meet the mom. Ask to see where the dogs eat, sleep, and play.
Get a Vet Exam Immediately
Have a vet examine the puppy within two days of bringing it home, even if it seems healthy.
Request Complete Health Records
Ask for vaccination records, deworming history, and vet exam results. For purebreds, ask for parent health clearances.
Get Everything in Writing
Written contract with health guarantees, return/refund policy, and spay/neuter terms. Verbal promises are unenforceable.
Use Secure Payment Methods
Pay with a credit card or another traceable method that offers buyer protection. Avoid wire transfers, crypto, or gift cards, which are difficult to recover.
Verify Breeder Credentials
Check USDA license, state breeder license, breed club memberships, and reviews. Ask for buyer references.
Know What to Look For
A trustworthy breeder welcomes visits, specializes in one or two breeds, prices fairly, and gives you time to decide without pressure.
Know Your State's Laws
Some states have lemon laws; others rely on contract law. Know your rights before you buy.
