Uncle Sam is a thoughtful, people-loving boy who takes a moment to process new situations but is incredibly polite and eager to connect.
🐾 Temperament Highlights
Human Assertiveness: Low–Medium
Uncle Sam was extremely polite when approaching his tester. He isn't the type of puppy who feels the need to charge into someone's space or immediately take control of an interaction.
Confidence: Medium–High
Looking at his test as a whole, Uncle Sam has a nice level of confidence, but he sometimes needs a minute to process something new. He may initially look to his person for a little reassurance, almost as though he wants someone to "hold his hand" while he figures things out.
We believe that as he matures and learns that the world is a safe place, much of that confidence will become his own. His ideal owner will provide security and leadership without encouraging uncertainty.
Motivation: High
This was one of Uncle Sam's standout qualities! He hadn't even known his tester for eight minutes before he was already willing to work with her and try the things she was asking of him. That willingness to engage should be a wonderful asset during training.
Nerve Strength & Resilience: Medium
When something surprised him, Uncle Sam sometimes needed a moment before moving forward. He wasn't incapable of recovering. He simply needed time to process what had happened.
Touch Tolerance: Medium–High, with potential to be High
Uncle Sam LOVES affection and physical touch from the people he knows. With unfamiliar people, he may want a little time to establish trust and rapport first. Once that relationship is established, we expect his touch tolerance to be very high.
Energy Level: Medium
Uncle Sam lands beautifully in the middle. He isn't presenting as an extremely high-energy puppy, nor is he particularly low energy. He appears to have a nice balance between activity and settling.
Sound Sensitivity: Medium–High
Unexpected sound was difficult for him. His initial response was to move away and give himself some space. However, he didn't completely lose himself in the experience and was able to seek security from the tester. A family willing to continue positive, gradual exposure to new sounds will be important for him.
Sight Sensitivity: Medium
His response to an unexpected visual stimulus was essentially, "Whoa...what was THAT? Give me a minute." 😂 He noticed it, processed it, and needed a little time before deciding what he thought.
Prey Drive: Medium–High Potential
We believe there may be more prey drive in Uncle Sam than he demonstrated during testing. His caution in the unfamiliar environment may have prevented us from seeing the full extent of it. As his confidence develops, this trait may become more apparent.
Human Focus: HIGH ❤️
Uncle Sam is absolutely a people dog. He wants connection with humans and naturally looks to people for direction and security. His relationship with his person is likely to be extremely important to him.
Dog Friendliness: Submissive–Neutral
When shown his reflection in our mirror test, Uncle Sam noticed the "other dog" but didn't feel compelled to engage. He did not demonstrate a strong need to seek out another dog and presented as neutral to submissive.
❤️ Tenderhearted: HIGH
This may be one of the most important things to understand about Uncle Sam.
He is a very tenderhearted puppy.
The tester's exaggerated emotions during our tenderhearted exercise felt quite big to him. He noticed emotional changes quickly and was affected by them.
Because of this, we believe Uncle Sam will thrive with a calm, emotionally steady owner who can be his source of confidence. A household with frequent intense emotional outbursts or unpredictable highs and lows could potentially feel overwhelming to him.
He's the kind of dog who may notice you're having a bad day before anyone else does. Just be careful, or the two of you may end up sitting on the couch eating ice cream and processing your feelings together. 😂❤️
🚽 Maturity Note
Uncle Sam was the only puppy during testing who urinated outside of our designated potty area.
This does not mean that he isn't learning his potty-training foundation. At this young age, puppies are still developing physically and mentally.
Instead, it gives us another little piece of information about him: Uncle Sam may simply need a little additional time and consistency as he matures.
His high motivation tells us that he is very willing to learn. His brain and body may just need a little extra time to catch up in certain areas.
🏡 Our Overall Impression
Uncle Sam is a gentle, thoughtful, highly people-oriented puppy with a wonderfully tender heart.
He isn't necessarily going to be the puppy who charges into every new experience without thinking. He wants to look, process, and occasionally check in with his person before deciding that everything is okay.
Give him a stable person to trust, continue showing him that the world is safe, and we believe you'll watch his confidence blossom.
His combination of high motivation, strong human focus, moderate energy, affection, and emotional sensitivity could create an incredibly connected relationship with the right family.
And with his DNA currently predicting an adult weight of approximately 60 pounds, Uncle Sam is expected to grow into a substantial Standard Goldendoodle with one very soft heart. 🇺🇸🐾❤️
