Whatsit – AKC Golden Retriever
Whatsit is a beautiful AKC Golden Retriever from Velma & Ransom’s “Whatchamacallit” litter and the only female we have available from Velma’s retirement litter. She is one of the smaller girls from the litter and has her mama Velma’s gorgeous wavy Golden coat.
Whatsit is confident, playful, social, and wonderfully comfortable in her own skin. She genuinely enjoys people and is very willing to engage and work with you, but she doesn’t need someone entertaining her every minute of the day. She’s equally happy joining you for something fun or finding a toy and occupying herself while you’re busy. That balance is one of my favorite things about her.
She has excellent natural confidence and loves figuring things out. During temperament testing, she was climbing obstacles and trying equipment before she was ever asked. She enjoys toys and interactive play and has those strong, classic Golden Retriever instincts to grab, carry, retrieve, and shake.
Whatsit is also a puppy who communicates rather than looking for conflict. She enjoys affection and seeks out interaction, but she isn’t a puppy who appreciates being manhandled. If she doesn’t like something, her preference is simply to wiggle away and leave. We think she will do best with a family that respects that communication and continues building a relationship based on trust, fair exchanges, and positive training.
Because of that lower tolerance for inappropriate handling, we are not recommending Whatsit for a home with very young children. Her strong prey/retrieving instincts also make her unsuitable for homes with cats, rabbits, chickens, or other small animals or livestock.
For the right home, Whatsit has the makings of a fantastic companion: affectionate without being needy, confident without needing to be managed constantly, playful and trainable, yet capable of entertaining herself when life is quiet. She would be equally easy to picture with a working household, retirees, or someone simply looking for a Golden who wants to share their life without needing to be the center of it.
There are no bad dogs—only bad matches. And for the family who appreciates exactly who Whatsit is, I think this girl is going to be an incredibly fun Golden to live with.
