Schipperkes are known as “little devils” because of their curious, mischievous nature. They’re wonderful family dogs who bond quickly with kids. However, they also march to the beat of their own drum and get easily distracted by rodents in the backyard, a new toy, or a hole that’s calling their name. Full-grown, they typically weigh 10-16 pounds and stand 10-13 inches tall.

Schipperkes are generally okay with older children who know how to handle dogs. Schipperkes are positive dogs that are fond of kids. If trained and socialized, they often latch on to children and become their best friend. They're fairly vocal dogs that bark regularly.

The Schipperke is an active dog that likes walking, running, and sports that use their brain. They need at least one long walk each day, but they won’t complain if you want a jogging buddy too. Schipperkes are very smart and have a talent for dog sports, like agility, rally, and flyball. Overall, their exercise needs are high.

Schipperkes have thick double coats of straight, harsh hair on the outside and softer hair underneath. Their fur is medium-length and shouldn’t be kept too long or short. Schipperkes may look like they need a lot of grooming, but brushing them once a week (or more often when they shed twice each year) and bathing them once in a while will do the trick. Grooming-wise, this breed is low-maintenance.

Schipperkes are best suited for a house with a good-sized yard. Schipperkes are notorious diggers and runners, so make sure they have plenty of room to play, a securely fenced yard, and are never allowed off leash. While they love being outdoors, their primary space should be indoors, where they can stay cool and be around people. They are fairly easy to train.
