How to set up an Authenticator App for Two-Factor Authentication

Safety & Security ·

Using an Authenticator App (like Google Authenticator or Authy) provides a more secure and reliable alternative to text, call, or email verification codes. Because these apps generate codes locally on your device, they work even without a cellular signal and are highly resistant to common hacking techniques like phishing or SIM-swapping.

Setting Up Your Authenticator App

  • Download an authenticator app to your mobile device. Many prefer Google Authenticator, Authy, or Microsoft Authenticator, all of which are available as free downloads through major app stores.
  • Log in to your Puppies.com account.
    • It is best to login through a laptop or desktop for setup, as you will need your phone's camera to scan an onscreen QR code.
  • Access your Account Settings. Click Menu in the upper-right and select Account Settings.
    • If using a mobile device, click Profile & Settings, and then click Account Settings below.
  • Click Setup Authenticator App. A unique QR code will appear on your screen.
  • Scan the QR code with your app. Open your Authenticator App, select the option to Scan a QR Code, and point your camera at your computer screen.
    • If you are using a single device, click Can't scan? Enter this Key Manually. Copy the provided key and paste it into your app under an option like Enter a setup key.
  • Enter your Verification Code. Locate the 6-digit code for Puppies.com in your app, enter it into the Verification Code field on the site, and click Enable Two-Factor Authentication.
  • Save your Backup Codes. Click Download Codes as a Text File. These ten codes are your "emergency key"...if you lose your phone, these are the only way to access your account.
  • Confirm and Finish. Once the codes are safely stored, click I've Saved My Backup Codes.

Once you've set up your Authenticator App within your Puppies.com account, you'll be prompted to provide your six-digit code (which changes every 30-60 seconds) as a security measure when you login from an unrecognized device. This keeps your account secure from unauthorized access.

If necessary, you can disable your Authenticator app in order to revert back to the traditional text/call/email two-factor authentication.

How to Disable Your Authenticator App

  • Log in to your Puppies.com account.
  • Access your Account Settings.
  • Locate the Authenticator App section and click the Manage button.
  • Click Disable Two-Factor Authentication.
