Message History, Retention Policies, and Read Receipts

Messages ·

The Puppies.com Message Center makes it easy to communicate safely with buyers and sellers. Below is a guide to how long your messages are saved, why empty conversation threads appear, and how to track message delivery with read receipts.

Message History & Retention Policy

To keep your inbox organized and maintain system performance, conversation threads in the Message Center are stored according to the following retention schedule:

  • 1-Year Retention: All active message threads are retained in your inbox for 1 year from the date the message was sent or received.

    • Previous 120-Day Policy (Prior to May 2026): Before May 2026, Puppies.com retained messages for 120 days. Conversations from early 2026 or earlier were automatically purged under that previous 120-day rule and cannot be recovered.

  • Deleted Accounts: If a buyer or seller permanently deletes their Puppies.com account, all associated message threads are permanently removed for both parties.

  • Non-Transferable: Message histories are tied to specific accounts and cannot be moved or merged if you switch email addresses or consolidate duplicate accounts.

Pro Tip: If you finalize a deposit, puppy purchase, or contract through the Message Center, we strongly recommend taking screenshots of your message history so you have a permanent record saved on your personal device.

Why Am I Seeing Blank Conversation Threads?

If you open a conversation in your inbox and see a blank window with no message history, it is usually due to one of the following reasons:

  • Message Purging: The messages in that thread reached the 1-year retention limit and were automatically removed by our system.

  • Account Deletion: The user you were communicating with deleted their account, which purges the message content.

  • System Delays: On rare occasions, a slow internet connection can cause messages to load slowly. Try refreshing your browser page or restarting the app.

Your Message Center also includes "read reciepts" which can help you check to confirm whether or not your message has been read by the recipient.

Understanding Read Receipts (Green Checkmarks)

You can easily check whether a seller or buyer has seen your message using the checkmark icons inside your Conversation Thread beneath each individual message you've sent on the right side:

  • Timestamp, No Checkmark: Your message has been sent, but not opened/read.

  • Green Checkmark: Your message has been opened and read by the recipient.

  • Viewing Read Timestamps:

    • On Desktop: Hover your mouse cursor over the green checkmark to see the exact date and time your message was read.

    • On Mobile Devices: Tap the green checkmark or message bubble to view the read timestamp.
